Why ex-EU pricing exists

Airlines price Business Class by departure market, not just by route. Demand, competition, taxes, and distribution costs differ between the UK and continental Europe, so the same long-haul journey can price very differently. This is usually structural rather than promotional. FareEngine exists to surface that pricing spread without making you search airport-by-airport by hand.

What FareEngine checks

Manual tools only show what you ask them to search. If you search London, they search London. FareEngine ranks likely gateway markets first, runs live checks against those airports and your direct option, then returns the answer in the frame that matters: total trip cost, not just headline fare. Up to four gateways are checked per search, with Business Class fares across scheduled carriers and optional alliance filtering.

Before you act on results

Repositioning is required
An EU gateway fare requires a separate journey to that departure airport before your long-haul flight — by train, short-haul flight, or both. This adds cost, travel time, and an additional booking to coordinate. The net total shown includes an estimated positioning cost but does not account for schedule disruption.
Connection risk
A delayed or cancelled positioning journey can cause a missed long-haul departure. This risk is not reflected in fare comparisons and must be evaluated independently. Build adequate buffer into your itinerary.
Not all routes produce a saving
Some long-haul destinations are priced uniformly across European markets. If your search returns no gateway advantage, that is the accurate result — not a failure of the tool.
Fares change
Prices are live at the moment of search. A fare available now may not be available when you book. Search close to when you intend to act. The comparison reflects the moment of search only.
